Time for un-wasting

Australian households could be saving as much as $2,500 a year by adopting some simple behavioural changes to cut their food waste.

Since its launch in September 2024, the Great Unwaste campaign has been working to boost public awareness of food waste, offering simple, practical, and achievable tips on how to reduce waste and save money.

Time and difficulty are common barriers to action, so the campaign helps people consider how to prepare the right amounts of food for their needs.

End Food Waste Australia's Campaign Director Mandy Hall, who is spearheading the campaign, says it is providing insights that will deliver immediate savings for families everywhere.

"When you realise that 3.4 million households in Australia are experiencing food insecurity, yet we throw away the equivalent of 7.7 million meals every day, it really does demand action and change," Hall says.

"The Great Unwaste campaign can provide the kind of practical, long-term strategies that Australian families need now," Hall added.

Some of these strategies include understanding how to store food to keep it fresh longer, planning meals to utilise leftover food, and scheduling a leftovers dinner night each week. The greatunwaste website also offers recipes, along with plenty of suggestions for meal planning, and hacks for measuring quantities.
